Boketto series
Boketto is a Japanese term that means "the art of doing nothing" or "gazing into the distance without thinking". It's derived from the word for daydreaming. This series is inspired the quiet act of gazing inward while using nature as an inspiration. The act of gazing into long distances, especially inspired by nature, is something that I find solace in and is something that has informed the color and marks that I use in these paintings.
Our relationships, our own thoughts and perceptions and how they can spin us around is always a motivational place for me to work from. I wanted to explore a visual way to work through questions like: "how do we relate to each other", "what are we here to do" and "how do we go deeper through seeking". ©Beth Ortman
